The Mortgage Bankers Association will use the Washington DC area as the first of three pilot programs making mortgage payments to assist families with critically ill children. The MBA announced the creation of the national 501(c)(3) non-profit organization during its annual convention in early October in Chicago. In a press release issued on October 10, 2011, the MBA announced it had selected Spare Key, a Minnesota-based charity that was started in 1997 to award mortgage grants to families with critically ill children, as the model for its new nationwide philanthropic initiative.
David H. Stevens, president and CEO of the MBA, said the organization had donated $50,000 to support the establishment of the pilots. Stevens also asked members to consider offering their own donations.
